Pieter Hildering, tras sus títulos de éxito, ‘Desde la Arena’ (2002), ‘Palabras sobre la corrida’ (2008) y ‘Más palabras de toros’ (2011), nos ofrece ahora, con ‘Tipografía Taurina’, un auténtico carrusel de instantáneas, nada pretenciosas, en las que el tema taurino fluye con sencillez y sentido práctico, abarcando desde la reflexión seria del entendido a la miscelánea amable de sus vivencias en el ambiente de la fiesta.
En el texto, desgrana comentarios que unen al toreaje de la etapa lidiadora con los coletudos de última hora, en el toreo moderno. Y así, la aproximación de José y Juan a diestros como Arroyo y Morante permite una visión amplia del fenómeno, expuesta en numerosos diseños literarios de temática muy diversa de amenidad, contrastada y de interés evidente para el lector.
Sólo nos queda aplaudir este esfuerzo editorial, que pone de manifiesto, una vez más, la meritoria tarea taurófila de un escritor extranjero, pues todo el desarrollo del toreo belmontino ha sido objeto de esta óptica lejana, y las aportaciones resultan interesantes por esa diversidad de procedencia que va desde el literato Jean Cocteau hasta el Nobel Ernest Hemingway, al representar hermosísima exposición y publicidad internacional para el arte de Cúchares.
El fenómeno tiene continuidad en los norteamericanos Barnaby Conrad y William Lyon, en los franceses Claude Popelín y Pierre Arnouil y en los britanicos Angus McNab y Kenneth Tynan, por citar solamente algunos de los numerosos ejemplos conocidos.
En definitiva, cuando Bergamín afirmaba que la tauromaquia era interplanetaria, destacaba la amplia dimensión de este rito y, sobre todo, su gran capacidad de penetración en el mundo de la intelectualidad, permitiendo esta enriquecedora visión del toreo que nos llega del exterior... porque la lidia, si es auténtica, se nos ofrece como emocionante representación de la vida misma, con toda su trágica incógnita de gloria y muerte.
After his previous and highly successful books, ‘Desde la Arena’ (2002), ‘Palabras sobre la corrida’ (2008) and ‘Más palabras de toros’ (2011), Pieter Hildering offers us now with ‘Tipografía Taurina’, a carrousel of instantaneous and unpretentious considerations in which the taurine subject flows and develops with logical simplicity and covers everything from the serious reflection of the seasoned aficionado to the pleasant miscellany of his experiences within the Fiesta’s unique ambience.
The text studies the relationship between bullfighting from its origins right up to the modern age. It links José [Joselito] and Juan [Belmonte] to Arroyo [José Miguel Arroyo “Joselito”] and Morante [de la Puebla], furnishing a broad view of the phenomenon, put forth in many literary undertakings, with a varied range of subjects of evident interest to the readers.
We can only applaud this editorial effort which evidences once again the meritorious work of a foreign writer in the area of bullfighting, for the “Belmonte-style” toreo has been the object of investigation and commentary from very distant vantage points, such as those of the literateur Jean Cocteau to Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway, when they discussed the very beautiful exhibition and international scope of the so-called “Art of Cúchares”.
The phenomenon was continued by the Americans Barnaby Conrad and Vincent Kehoe, the French Claude Popelín and Pierre Arnouil and by the British Angus McNab and Kenneth Tynan, to cite just a few of the many well-known examples.
In summary, when Bergamín stated that Tauromachy was interplanetary, he highlighted the considerable extension of this ritual and above all its great capacity to make its way into the intellectual world, thus achieving a fascinating vision of Toreo from a foreign point of view... Because the lidia, if it is authentic, offers us an exciting representation of life itself, with all of its tragic mystery of glory and death.

Pieter Hildering, a resident of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is a graphic designer and, until his retirement, professor of design at the Arnhem Academy of Art and Design. For ten years he collaborated with the magazine Avance Taurino, is an honorary member of the prestigious Valencian Asociación De Tinto y Oro and a member of the Club Internacional Taurino. He has been honored with the silver insignia of La Asociación de Los Amigos de Manuel Montoliú y Curro Valencia. He has written extensively on bullfighting and has published several works on the corrida. Amongst others: Words about bullfighting/Palabras sobre la corrida. (In English /Spanish) (2008) and More words about bulls/Más palabras de toros. (also in English/ Spanish).
His latest book, Taurine Typography/Tipografía Taurina, (again, in English and Spanish) was released in January 2016: prologue by Don Mariano Tomás Benítez (translated by Muriel Feiner, a phenomenal author in het own right).
