Pieter Hildering recounts that after his first corrida, he had little more idea what went on than he had at the beginning. That's true for a large proportion of first-timers, unless they go with someone who can offer some explanation. Most of us infected by 'the little worm' find our understanding, and with it our enjoyment, enriched by picking up some of the bullfight voca-bulary, and these short stories help the beginner to do just that. For example, it is easier to recognise the basic cape pass, as Pieter describes, and to understand its most common variant, when you know their names: verónica and half-verónica. Aficionados imagine an ideal bullfight, and their enjoyment, as well as in the overt emotion - which can be experienced in any language - is in the detail, best appreciated once knowledge has been acquired. Familiarity with the jargon makes that detail easier to penetrate. This book also helps native Spanish readers to improve their knowledge of English - and of Anglo Saxon attitudes to bullfighting.

Seguramente, muchísmos neófitos comparten esta experiencia desconcertante, si no tengan la ventaja que alguien les explique lo sucedido. Nosotros que llevamos 'el gusanillo' en las entrañas sabemos que la comprehensión, y con ella el placer, se enriquecen cuando aprendamos algo del vocabulario taurino. Resulta más fácil, por ejemplo, reconocer el lance básico con la capa, y entender su variante más frecuente, cuando sepamos sus nombres: la verónica y la media verónica.
El aficionado siempre espera la corrida ideal, y el placer que experimenta nace no solamente en la emoción del acontecimiento - que se siente en cualquier idioma - sino también en los detalles, mejor apreciados con un cierto nivel de entendimiento. Un conocimiento, aunque sea básico, del lenguaje taurino facilita la compenetración. Este libro servirá tambíen al lector hispanoparlante para mejorar su inglés - ¡y su apreciación de las actitudes anglosajonas hacía el toreo!

Pieter Hildering (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) 1948, is a graphic designer and a professor of design. He is a great lover of Spain and its culture and writes for the magazine Avance Taurino. Besides being president-founder of the Peña Taurina de Holanda. He is an honorary member of the renowned association 'De Tinto y Oro' of Valencia and was given the same title by the peña 'El Buchito'. Recently he became a member of the distinguished Club Internacionál Taurino. In the year 2000 the Dutch composer Jan Bus dedicated his piece '¡Oreja! ¡Escucha!' to him. It received its world premiere in Buñol (Valencia), played by the wonderful 'La Artística de Buñol'. He published his first book about the corrida, 'Vanaf Het Zand' (Across the Sand) in The Netherlands in 2002. Six years later the bi-lingual 'Words about Bullfighting/Palabras sobre la corrida', was released, containing a collection of short essays, originally written in English for the magazine Avance Taurino. Hildering has contributed to several publications - in 2009 the Asociación Cultural de Tauromaquia 'La Malagueta' invited him to contribute to their magazine as did the Valencian Federación Taurina in 2010. He has lectured on Spanish culture in The Netherlands and Belgium as well as in Spain. The interior typography and the covers of his books are designed by the author.

Seis años después salió su bilingüe 'Words about bullfighting / Palabras sobre la corrida', una colección de ensayos cortos, originalmente escritos en Inglés para la revista Avance Taurino. Hildering ha contribuido a diversas publicaciones culturales - recientemente a la revista de la Asociación Cultural de Tauromaquia 'La Malagueta' y en 2010 la de la valenciana Federación Taurina. Ha dado conferencias en Holanda y Bélgica, así como en España. La tipografía del interior y las portadas de sus libros han sido diseñados por el propio autor.
